Traveling from Rome to Orvieto by Train:

When planning your journey from Rome to Orvieto, there are a few options to consider for a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Option 1: Leonardo Express to Roma Termini The festival has long suggested taking the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini, and then catching the train to Orvieto. This route is often recommended for its simplicity and convenience. It allows for a seamless transition between the airport and the main train station in Rome. Additionally, the time between trains at Termini provides an opportunity to explore the station’s amenities, including restaurants and services. Moreover, departing from Termini reduces the chances of boarding a train going in the wrong direction, as all trains typically leave in the same direction.

Option 2: Local Train from Tiburtino Alternatively, taking the local train from Tiburtino is also a viable option, which can be faster depending on the time of day. However, this route may be better suited for more experienced travelers, unless detailed platform information is provided. While this route may offer a quicker journey, it requires a bit more familiarity with navigating the train system.

Train Departure from Termini to Orvieto When taking the train from Termini to Orvieto, it’s important to note that the platform (binario) number is often announced fairly close to departure time. Be prepared to walk quickly to reach the platform. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that trains are not listed as “Orvieto” on the departure boards. Instead, they are named by their end destination, usually Firenze SMN. Look for Orvieto listed among the intervening towns. Typically, trains to Orvieto depart from Platform (binario) 2 Est, located all the way to the left and further back behind other trains. Be prepared for a potentially long walk or quick run to reach the platform in time for departure.

Arriving in Orvieto by Car:

If you’re arriving in Orvieto by car, there are several parking options available for your convenience:

Piazza Della Pace at Orvieto Scalo: This parking lot is located behind the train station and is reportedly free according to recent information. From there, you can walk under the train station and follow directions to the funicular for easy access to the town center.

Campo della Fiera or Campo Ex Foro Boario: This parking area is where the buses arrive. While there may be a couple of confusing turns, especially without GPS, it could be the easiest option if you’re arriving with a group and coordinating transportation to apartments. Rates for parking here are unknown.

Piazza Cahen, at the top of the funicular: While there may not be a distinct advantage to parking here, if you happen to take a wrong turn and end up here, you can park and easily access the town center by following directions for Linea 1 or Circolare A to Duomo, or Circolare C for Piazza della Repubblica. Rates for parking at Piazza Cahen are also unknown.

Before parking, it’s recommended to check for any updated parking regulations and rates, especially if you’re planning an extended stay in Orvieto.

Traveling with Instruments:

String Players. Please contact Intensive Strings Director Robyn Julyan as you make arrangements to transport your instruments to Italy. As you may already know, there are evolving regulations about traveling internationally with instruments that may be made of rosewood, tortoise shell, or other protected materials. Instruments are also available for rent in Italy at an extra cost.

Lost Luggage:

It is an unfortunate thing, but it happens. If this happens, please make your way to the Lost Luggage area of the Fiumicino airport. Here you will be able to file a claim. Do not provide them with your contact information, but rather with the contact information of our accommodations in Orvieto. This will be the easiest way to reunite individuals with their items.

Departing Italy

Many Orvieto Musica participants choose to extend their stay in Italy or Europe after the festival concludes. As such, Orvieto Musica does not formally organize transportation from Orvieto to Fiumicino at the end of the festival. However, optional transport may be arranged for an additional cost.

If you plan to depart directly from Orvieto to Fiumicino for your flight home, it’s advisable to schedule your departure from Fiumicino no earlier than noon on your departure day. Trains from the center of Rome to the airport run daily starting at 7:00 a.m.

Taking a taxi to the airport can be expensive, and hotel rooms near the airport tend to be prohibitively priced.

Immersing Yourself in Italian Culture

A significant aspect of the joy of participating in Orvieto Musica is the opportunity to immerse yourself in Italian life for three weeks. We, at the festival, are committed to ensuring you feel at ease with and embrace the culture. From assisting you with shopping to recommending wines and restaurants, helping you plan weekend travels and sightseeing, offering Italian language classes, and even encouraging you to appreciate natural light in rehearsal rooms, and to notice architectural and historical details, we strive to enhance your cultural experience.

Orvieto Musica adheres to the traditional Italian “riposo” daily—a three-hour afternoon break in the schedule for lunch, quiet activities, and rest during the hottest part of the day. If you wish to continue your musical study during riposo, please remember to bring a practice mute, headphones, or music for memorization or quiet study.
