Kim Walker stands among the most distinguished bassoonists of her generation, her legacy rooted in a prolific solo career that began in her teens. At just seventeen, she made a landmark recital debut at London’s Wigmore Hall in 1982, prompting The Times to remark, “She outclassed many an operatic rival.” Since then, Walker has graced the stages of major international festivals and performed at private events for the White House and the United Nations. Her artistry has been featured as a soloist at the London Proms, Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts, Ravinia and Wolf Trap festivals, and in Paris, Berlin, and New York, where The New York Times hailed her as “the sure and fluent soloist” in Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto (RV 484).

With an extraordinary discography of 33 solo recordings, Walker has collaborated with leading orchestras and renowned conductors. Her recordings for DECCA, Collins, and GALLO-VDE—often with luminaries such as Vladimir Ashkenazy and the Berlin RIAS, Thomas Vasary and the London Philharmonia, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic and the London Mozart Players—span the core bassoon repertoire and feature world premieres of sonatas and chamber works, including projects with the Acacia and Alexander String Quartets, and collaborative pianist Julius Drake.

As an orchestral musician, Walker’s decade-long tenure in Europe included positions with the Bern and Biel orchestras in Switzerland and the RAI Torino in Italy. In 1985, she broke new ground as the first woman to perform principal bassoon with the London Symphony under Leonard Bernstein. Her reputation quickly led to invitations as guest principal with ensembles such as the Montreal Symphony, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, and l’Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, performing under the baton of eminent conductors including Armin Jordan, Antal Dorati, Charles Dutoit, Sir Georg Solti, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Richard Hickox, Lorin Maazel, and Ivan Fischer.

A passionate chamber musician, Walker was invited to the Marlboro Music Festival while still at Interlochen Arts Academy. She has been a regular guest at Prades, Schleswig-Holstein, Lucerne, and Korsholm festivals, and was a founding member of the Fidelio Wind Ensemble in Geneva and the Queens of the Night Bassoon Quartet, performing at prestigious events such as MIDEM. From 1993 to 2005, she appeared as guest artist with the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society, collaborating with ensembles and artists of the highest caliber, including the Guarneri Quartet, Ensemble Contrechamps, Menahem Pressler, Leonard Hokanson, Julius Drake, Aurèle Nicolet, Richard Tognetti, Dimitri Sitkovetsky, David Shifrin, Joseph Silverstein, and Maurice Bourgue.

A champion of contemporary music, Walker was invited by Karlheinz Stockhausen in 1982 to create and premiere the bassoon version of In Freundschaft in London. She has worked closely with composers such as Luciano Berio, György Ligeti, Simon Bainbridge, Sean Shepherd, Richard Rodney Bennett, Sofia Gubaidulina, David Baker, Anne Boyd, and Elena Katz-Chernin.

Her formative studies were with Sol Schoenbach at the Curtis Institute of Music, followed by the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, and advanced work in baroque and classical bassoon at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

Walker’s commitment to teaching began at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève in 1981, later joining Indiana University as Professor of Bassoon in 1994. She served as Director of Arts & Cultural Outreach and Associate Dean for Research at IU before moving to Australia as Dean of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2004. In 2018, she returned to the United States to direct the School of Music at Texas Tech University, where she continues to teach bassoon and lead the Graduate Arts Entrepreneurship Certificate. Walker’s dedication to global education is reflected in her longstanding relationships with institutions in Shanghai and Beijing, where she was named Distinguished Guest Professor at Beijing’s CCM in 2011.

Throughout her career, Walker has been recognized as an international authority—musician, guest speaker, professor, adjudicator, and board member—her influence spanning Europe, Australia, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Her students now occupy principal chairs in leading orchestras and prestigious faculty appointments worldwide.

Walker’s leadership extends beyond performance and teaching. She earned the Stanford Graduate School of Business Executive Non-Profit Leadership certificate and taught “Strategic Leadership” in the University of Sydney’s EMBA program for eight years. As the founder and CEO of VirtuosoCEO and The Performance Dimension LLC, she continues to shape the future of arts entrepreneurship. She also founded KWBassoon at age 17.

An editor for Musica Rara editions, Walker curates a significant collection of rare manuscripts from around the globe. Recent projects include filming and recording Stockhausen’s In Freundschaft, recording a series of works written for her including Elena Katz-Chernin’s Setting Out with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, Don Freund’s Life of the Party and Sean Shepherd’s Twilight for GALLO-VDE records. As Artistic and Executive Director of Orvieto Musica in Italy, Walker continues to inspire new generations of musicians. She remains in global demand as a soloist, chamber musician, and masterclass leader across Europe, Asia, South America, and the United States.
