John Manning is the Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium, and serves as the Associate Director for Undergraduate Studies at the University of Iowa. Mr. Manning received his undergraduate degree from Boston University, where he studied with Sam Pilafian and co-founded the award-winning Atlantic Brass Quintet. With the Atlantic Brass Quintet, he won the “Premiere Prix” at the 1992 Concours International de Quintettes de Cuivres, and has performed in 48 U.S. States and more than 22 countries.

Mr. Manning served on the Executive Board of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) as the Conferences Coordinator from 2019 to 2023. He has hosted two regional tuba euphonium conferences; the Northeastern Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) at University of Massachusetts in 2003, and the Hawkeye Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference at the University of Iowa in 2007. In 2019, he hosted the International Tuba Euphonium Conference (ITEC) at the University of Iowa School of Music. In 2021, as the ITEA Conferences Coordinator, he helped organize and co-host the organization’s first Virtual Tuba Euphonium Conference.

John has recorded over 10 CDs with the Atlantic Brass Quintet and two solo CDs on the Summit Records label. His debut solo recording, Four Corners:Tuba Music from around the World, was released in 2009, followed in 2016 by his second solo recording, Field Notes: Tuba Music from Iowa. This summer, he is looking forward to teaching and performing at the Atlantic Brass Quintet Seminar at St. Bonaventure University, New York and the Orvieto Festival in Italy NY. John Manning is a Yamaha artist and exclusively performs on his YCB-621, with a Jim Self signature mouthpiece and his YFB-822 with a Bobo Solo mouthpiece.
